G‑d placed humanity on this planet with a mandate: Work with it, protect it, leave it better than you found it.
To guide us in this cosmic mission, He gave us seven laws, all of them crucial elements to achieving a harmonious, beautiful, and meaningful life:
- Embrace G‑d's Oneness
- Do Not Curse Him
- Guard Human Life
- Respect Animal Life
- Respect the Property of Others
- Live a Moral Family Life
- Ensure Justice

Not sure how non-Jews would even know of the noahide laws. They are not anywhere in the bible, so only Jews would know of them. Doesn't make sense! On the other hand, the 10 commandments apply to everyone, and everyone knows them. The blessings and curses also apply to anyone who follows them (nor not). Individuals and nations alike, whether Jewish or not. So the noahide laws do not make any sense to me at all, since the "gentile" would never come in contact with thiem or know them. Maybe someone could explain this.
"Observe the Sabbath day to keep it holy" doesn't apply to non-Jews and we view adultery differently than other cultures.
Well, it is Jews who discuss the issue and Jews who teach each other about it.
My take is this.
All living human beings today spring from the genes of Noah and his wife and the couples of his children.
Hence the name.
Then, there is a belief which is either deduced by human reasoning or revealed by the spirit of God that although every person has free will there is also something about being made in the image and likeness of God that an intrinsic instinct or preference for good remains despite the fall which occurred through the disobedience of Adam and Eve.
So, these "laws" are the result of long meditation and discussion amongst believers in the one, true, holy supreme good.
It is also obvious that the perspective is not just personal virtue, by then humankind lived everywhere in groups and interaction with fellow human beings, fellow living creatures and the environments which provided the necessities of life - rules for the group survival and thriving were necessary
That's actually the point -- for Jews to make it known to the world, not for the non-Jewish world to have to figure it out on their own.
Thank you Karen. My question, though, was how would gentiles even know of noahide laws? Trust me, the average Christian would know nothing of them, let alone the oral torah from whence they come.
As for keeping the Sabbath holy, that is a Christian belief as well. The only difference is that Christians observe the Sabbath on Sunday, not Saturday. I would have to disagree here, as I believe G-d made the Sabbath for all mankind.
The other 7 Jewish festivals are different. They are all about Jewish history, not Gentile, so of course only Jews would celebrate them. That I understand. These noahide laws, not judging all humanity by the same criteria, that doesn't make sense to me.
Not sure how you would view adultery different. Adultery is adultery. But thanks for your response in regards to noahide laws.
Christians keep "the Lord's Day" holy, i.e. Sunday. "Sabbath" comes from the Hebrew word for "seven." The Sabbath is observed (roughly) from Friday sundown until Saturday after Sundown (which is coming soon where I am). It's for Jews, as are the other nine Commandments. You have seven, we have 613, which includes those 10. Observe that the Sabbath is not one of the seven.
Adultery in Judaism applies only to a married woman who has consensual sex with someone other than her husband, hence my original observation--clearly not "[a]dultery is adultery." As to how non-Jews would know about the Seven Noahide laws, you're here and know about them now. Others will learn as well because that's what G-d intends.
Hi Eliezer. You missed my point. How to Jews make it known to the world if Judaism is NOT evangelical? And we know it's not. So how does the rest of the world find out what the noahide laws are? They don't.
And it doesn't matter, since the rest of the world DOES know what the 10 commandments are and already follow them. In America, they are above the door of the supreme court, on the wall of the house of representatives and still in most court rooms across the country. I'm sure G-d would be pleased with that, so why aren't you?
And let's not forget the fact that the Bible has been translated into every language on earth. It's not just the Jewish Bible anymore. Why wouldn't that make you glad? I'm truly curious. Doesn't that take us closer to "every knee shall bow" to the one true God?

What about Shabbos! 6 days and on the 7th is Shabbos. Can't help myself anymore. I'm going through Mishneh Torah just because... for its own sake. I can't see myself anywhere else. I was born and raised gentile (with the "golden rule"). But after 40 yrs here I am.
Shabbat is a special command that is a covenant between G-d and the Jewish nation. It is not one of the Noahide Laws because it is not for all of humanity. See Exodus 31 and Ezekiel 20.
In Exodus 2 He gives the Sabbath rule, before Israel existed. The Sabbath is for all mankind.
Ye shall have one manner of law, as well for the stranger, as for one of your own country: for I am the LORD your God. ~ Leviticus 24:22
I'm going to venture a guess that Rabbi Adelman knows more about our laws than you do.
Perhaps you mean Exodus 20 and maybe you need to look up the definition of "exodus." Israel didn't exist but the CHILDREN OF ISRAEL certainly did and we were given the laws that we'd agreed to live by.

Then what is a person who is decended from a Jew and a Christian? One who is then raised in a mostly Christian household. Is he then a Noahide or a Jew.
Judaism is matrilineal. So, if your mother is Jewish, you are 100% Jewish. If your father is Jewish, but your mother is not, then you are 100% not Jewish. See Why is Jewishness matrilineal
Thank you Rabbi for your work. As a Gentile from a Christian background, I find it curious that having been exposed to both Protestant and Catholic dogma, the Noahide Laws were never mentioned by anyone to me before I starting subscribing to Chabad and studying Judaism online. I have a few questions if I may: (a) When were the Noahide Laws first recognised by the Rabbis? (b) In terms of other religions/cults such as Hinduism, Christianity, Jainism, Buddhism, Jehova Witness, Scientology etc, is G-d expecting them to become Noahides? and (c) if the other Nations/religions don't convert to Noahide, what is their role in Creation?
1) The seven Noahide Laws are spelled out in the Talmud, based on scriptural evidence. They stretch back to Noah's time. See Sanhedrin 56a-57a.
2) That is the expectation for all of humanity.
3) Their job is to do as many good deeds as possible. G-d has a plan for each person. He does the judging. We just do the teaching and encouraging. Sometimes, a soul comes down to this world for 70 years to do one good deed to help another.
Dear Rabbi, thank you for your reply. What perplexes me is whether or not one has to declare oneself a Noahide (and to whom), or is it possible to be a righteous gentile without having the boxes ticked? If one knows what is good and abides by the 7 or 10 Commandments, or even beyond that, is this enough?
Where do the noahide fit under the 613? We follow the mitzvot that belong to us as messianic Gentiles including Shabbat, dietary laws, and moedim, but interested to know how many of the 613 commandments are under the noahide laws.

The Talmud tells of 613 mitzvot, positive and negative. Shabbat, kashrut, etc are mitzvot commanded to Jews. Bnei Israel
Would the noahide help a Christian? Many of whom have done there best to adhere to the laws even though they've broken the first?
Where are these 7 laws spoken to Mankind by God? I see no specific commands to Noah as you write them in a list.

Genesis 2:16 - idolatry
Leviticus 24:15 - blasphemy
Genesis 2:17 - theft
Genesis 2:24; Genesis 20:13; Genesis 19:29-36; Leviticus 18:3; Leviticus18:30 - forbidden relationships
Genesis 9:5-6 - murder
Genesis 9:4 - dealing with animals
Six commandments were given to Adam and one additional commandment to Noah.
Genesis 9:6 - legal order- is about shedding blood, not order. Just that we all are part of the Creators plan.
Genesis 2:16 - idolatry - is not correct reference
Leviticus 24:15 - blasphemy - is not correct reference
Genesis 2:17 - theft - that is a stretch to relate it to theft instead of disobedience
Genesis 2:24; Genesis 20:13; Genesis 19:29-36; Leviticus 18:3; Leviticus18:30 - forbidden relationships - good family values needed for healthy relationships.
Genesis 9:5-6 - murder - But killing is permitted under law and at times of war. Deuteronomy 20 seems a forgotten chapter in our modern times. And those who do follow the commands of Deuteronomy 20 with added laws of deception and the need to humiliate others instead have only now been handed the skills of nuclear destruction by the people who gave up on God. Genesis 9:4 - dealing with animals - unconditional love and respect for all Creation is a universal law of Heavenly values.

Judaism does not engage in missionary work among non-Jews. How do Orthodox rabbis want to bring the 7 Noahide Laws to the attention of non-Jews? And to what extent does this encounter resistance from Christians in particular, who wrongly believe that the entire Torah is also intended for them and not just for Jews?
My rabbi said there are many more than 7 laws they have to follow. Can you post a list of All the laws they are obligated to follow?
Your Rabbi may be referring to the fact that the 7 Laws are general Commandments, each containing many parts and details. The parts and details correspond to 66 Commandments of the 613 that Jews are commanded.
According to some Torah authorities, there are an additional 3 Laws, even though the Children of Noah were not commanded to do them. Hence, there are only 7.
These additional 3 Laws are based on the fact that non-Jews have traditionally taken upon themselves to fulfill these 3 Commandments.
They are:
1) Giving charity
2) Honoring and respecting your parents
3) Praying to G-d

GREETINGS from an older Noahide in Nova Scotia. I realize Florida is a big state (we used to winter there). Have you every heard of a chap Norman (Nota) Feinstein? He was living in Montreal for some years and they returned to the US a few years ago. His wife taught people going through conversion. Nota was the leader of a Noahide group in Montreal for some years and he was very good at it. He might still be giving his weekly on-line lectures to Noahides in Montreal. I believe they live in the Miami area (big place!). Apparently, Nota continues to be active in promoting prayer in schools and the Noahide Movement. Don in Nova Scotia

Though they should be modest - see below, yet, I cannot say that it has to be the "same modesty standards that Jews follow".
The Rebbe explains:
"Rabbi Yochanan said: ‘Had the Torah not been given, we would have learnt modesty from a cat, [and not to commit] theft from an ant.’ ” Rashi comments, “He [G-d] imbued them [the animals of the land and the birds of the sky] with wisdom in order to teach us.”
...what difference does it make what would have occurred “had the Torah not been given”? ...this is relevant... in terms of the obligations of Gentiles. For certain matters, although they are not included in the Noahide Code, an obligation exists to derive them from “the animals of the land..." From a talk Shavuot 5747 (1987).
Are they obligated to also dress with the same dress standards that jews follow though
I think they should have to observe the modesty standards too.

Before Noah, back to Adam, the gift of existence from the creator was only his image and likeness, We were not made God.
Before their disobedience, the first man and woman were ruled directly by God - "face to face" and they were guided to continue the first six virtuous ways of being and behaving by God providing the last - direct governance.
After the disobedience of Eve followed by Adam, they lost the direct guidance and so for many generations of human beings chaos reigned and everybody experienced the terrible effects of selfish wilful behaviour involving life and death, sexuality, property, power, truth and the animals they shared the earth with.
So, God began to guide a remnant of this barbarian horde, Noah etc, by the next step of saving them; giving them the elementary first rules to live by to prepare the human race for Abraham, Moses and eventually Messiah.
Someone needs to publicize the 7 laws.

The existence of the Noahide Laws is widespread and has been for a long time.
Mature recollection will reveal that across the whole world adherence to any law whatsoever is declining and every month seems to be declining more.
The existence of the Decalogue likewise.
The idiotic attempt by the United Nations to promulgate a system called International Law is probably the latest in the line.
And yet, the earth remains in a state of turmoil, with wars and rumours of wars and trouble from nations and states down to the core of society, the family.
Law brings death. The Holy Spirit brings life.
