A mezuzah (Hebrew: מְזוּזָה "doorpost"; plural: מְזוּזוֹת mezuzot) comprises a piece of parchment called a klaf contained in a decorative case and inscribed with specific Hebrew verses from the Torah (Deuteronomy 6:4-9 and 11:13-21).
In the Torah, there is a direct relationship between the mitzvah of mezuzah and Divine protection. A mezuzah affixed to the doorpost as commanded by G‑d at Sinai still has the power to “not allow the destroyer to come into your houses to smite you”. Indeed, immediately after the commandment of mezuzah, the Torah continues
... so that your days may be multiplied, and the days of your children... (Deuteronomy XI, 21)
This verse is the biblical source of the firm belief in the power of the mezuzah to protect from harm and to prolong one’s life.

Mezuzot should be checked twice every seven years to see if they have been affected by adverse weather conditions, or by folding (which can cause cracks in the letters), or if any other defect has occurred. It is preferable to check Mezuzot which are on the outside of a building more often, due to their vulnerability to the elements.
